Ayudante de direccion desde 1932 y director de mas de cien peliculas desde 1937, primero para Republic hasta 1944, mas tarde para Columbia hasta 1948, y despues hasta 1956 para Universal. A medida que pasaba de una productora a otra los presupuestos de sus peliculas iban siendo mas holgados, por lo que no es de extranar que su ultimo western, que es tambien su ultima pelicula, El gran Jack, sea la de presupuesto mas amplio y, dicho sea de paso, la mejor. Sherman es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los grandes especialistas del western. Una ojeada a su filmografia hace innecesarias otras explicaciones; entre 1937 y 1943 trabaja a un ritmo frenetico para satisfacer las necesidades de algunas de las estrellas del genero, destacando, en particular, su dedicacion a la serie The Three Mes quiteers. 1902-1981Sus primeros anos los ocupa en labores de actor de vodevil. Aprende el oficio de realizador de James Cruze, que le da la alternativa en 1934, con Amor en ruta, modesta pelicula de serie basada en una obra de Zane Grey. Su labor como director, con casi noventa peliculas en su haber, entre cine y television, fue anodina, destacando eso si por su eficacia como gestor, lo que hizo que le fueran encomendados muchos proyectos en los que no se deseaba gastar demasiado dinero. Lo mejor de si mismo lo dio en la comedia, genero al que se dedico preferentemente a partir de los anos 40. Trabajo con alguna asiduidad para la pareja Bud Abbott-Lou Costello, manteniendo una importante relacion personal con el segundo de ellos. Su ultimo western estrenado, Zorro, the Avenger (1960), es una sintesis de 6 episodios de la serie televisiva que, con el mismo titulo, produjo Walt Disney. 1907-1993La tan manida palabreja “artesano” se invento, sin duda, para definir a Gordon Douglas, un magnifico profesional, capaz de lo mejor y que no conocia la palabra “peor”. Una riquisima filmografia ilustra cualquier comentario elogioso que se quiera hacer acerca de este director, que realizo un punado de westerns, algunos de los cuales son, sencillamente, so berbios. Bastara con citar tres: Solo el valiente, un intenso drama claustrofobico, la enigmatica Embos cada y la itinerante Rio Conchos, modelo de virtudes cinematograficas. Neoyorquino, fue primero ac tor infantil, despues actor joven, mas tarde creador de gags para Hal Roach y, por fin, realizador. RKO, Columbia y, sobre todo, Warner Bros consumieron lo esencial de su labor como director. Fue para la ultima para la que realizo sus mejores peliculas, y tambien sus mejores westerns. Probablemente la obra maestra de Douglas sea su filme fantastico La humanidad en peligro (Them!, 1954), producto modesto pero de una intensidad casi nunca alcanzada en el cine de ciencia-ficcion. Hay que decir, con pena, que fracaso en el innecesario remake de Stagecoach, que rodo en 1966, y que en Espana llevo el titulo Hacia los grandes horizontes.Girl Rush. 1944. 65 minutos. 1899-1980Prolifico director, capaz de rodar entre seis y siete filmes por ano, durante treinta, ajustandose siempre al presupuesto, cuya filmografia en el western se centra en la serie del cowboy cantante Roy Rogers, en algunas peliculas de la correspondiente serie del tambien cowboy cantante Gene Autry, y en la reunion, de dos en dos, de diversos capitulos del serial televisivo dedicado a Wild Hill Hickcok, con Guy Ma dison y Andy Devine como protagonistas. Estos ultimos, un total de 28 episodios distribuidos en catorce peliculas, no figuran aqui, dado su caracter de filmes realizados para TV que no han sufrido modificacion alguna antes de su pase en sa las de cine. Falle cido en 1980, puede resultar sorprendente que Mc - Donald firme una ultima pelicula como director en 1994. Se explica porque el largometraje en cuestion esta formado por escenas tomadas de otro serial televisivo, dedicado en esta ocasion al famosisimo Wyatt Earp, y escenas nuevas ro dadas para completar el metraje.
